  • What records must I keep for HMRC, and for how long?

You must keep records of everything your business earns and spends, plus proof: receipts, invoices, bank statements. The rule on timing is five years after the 31 January submission deadline for the relevant tax year, so records for 2025/26 must be kept until at least 31 January 2032. You do not send records in with your return, but HMRC can ask to see them, and sloppy records are the first thing a tax check unpicks. Cited to GOV.UK, checked 20 October 2026.
